Studio Practice

My original plan for this is to print of the photo and then photograph that on the wall and so on, but i want to look into doing it digitally as i find this will be easier to do. As well as it may be better to take the time to learn this, for if i was to use it in the future. I also feel like i could get a better quality photo this way. This way I can also do more experiments, and could see if i could replace the patter with a different one. I am open to still doing the original idea if things don't go to plan, but I want to focus more on doing it  digitally.  https://www.adobe.com/uk/creativecloud/photography/discover/droste-effect.html A simple recursive image. There are a few different styles of Droste effect images. The first kind is a simple recursive image, like the cocoa box, which contains a replica of itself. ā€œThis is very doable in Photoshop because it’s a matter of selecting your entire canvas, copying it, scaling it down and pasting it,ā€ says Sommers. ā€œIf you took ...

Professional talks - Adam Oglesby (missing photos)

Adam Oglesby - Model maker for films He was working in non art related jobs for 20years before he joined the access course at Nottingham College, and later joined uni in 2018 or 2019. In his talk, he spoke about his early work (line drawings and models he created in uni) as well as some of the films he worked on. He spoke about his time working on, 'Operation Gaff', 'Robin Hobbs Farseer Trilogy' - these being work he did in uni - as well as the films, 'After', 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly warfare', 'Rivals', and 'Fountain of Youth' that is a film still in process of being made.  I really enjoyed this talk, i found seeing the behind the scenes on what goes into set design very interesting as well as seeing elements of films that isn't often shown.  (i have the notes from this, as well as the photos that i need to upload still)

(rough notes on what I done) These are some sketches I did on the original idea of creating an illusions and then some designs for the pattern. The process of making the pattern - the watercolour painting - wish did some more designs and did some simple ones (did start one but didn't finish it)  Experiment on how the pattern will look with and without using the technique. Experiment with making them look like tiles - 1950s - inspired by a comment a fellow student made  Making the repeating pattern digitally - on photoshop Putting the pattern on the wall - very long and has a lot of small mistakes in it from where the images did not line up properly  - if do again I want to do long sheets like a wallpaper as to minimise the chances of having gaps in the patter - you cant see the gaps unless you look up close at it ...

I want to look at some artists who works with simple shapes, lose paintings and suggestive. This is both as looking where my own works fall in the art world as well as expanding my view, as I wish to have a more lose approach to one of my planned pieces (stop motion of bamboo growing through paintings) Gabriele Maurus - Paintings of Food (all photo are from  https://www.saatchiart.com ) It looks like all of these works have used watercolor in some way, some being more focused on that and some using it to add colour. These pieces remind me of how I create my own paintings. I mostly work with watercolor with some sketchy lines (mostly in pen which I add after the paint layer, sometimes a pencil sketch beforehand). I like to use the properties of watercolor to blend the colours together and let it fall in its own way, sometimes I will be more detailed with my brushstrokes when the paint is more dry but I mostly add more detail work with a different median such as pen, 'Four Green Bean...

This is a small experiment for making a repeating pattern, the purpose of this was to see if the technique works what I did. Tomorrow I want to start making a full version of this, looking at some possible design. (sketchbook sketches are shown in the blog about the final repeating pattern)

A small talk with Julian (the day before original decline) Today I had a small talk with Julian on my plans for the rest of the project and he gave some recomendations/ideas of things i can explore. My orginal plan was to make the model sink and items for that as well as 3 small scale mix media painting experiments (a 4th or some larger ones if i had time to do them). He liked these ideas but want me to still do somthing with the sink in the studio like i orgianlly planned too, he gave some ideas that i would like to explore as well. He recomendated 'dressing the sink', this involved using the sink to display my work as well as some other instulations i could do. The first idea was putting my paintings or other work at the sink and taking a good quality photo of it, using the sink as a part of my dispaying of work. With that idea he also said about then putting up the photo, taking a photo of that and so on, creating an endless image, i would also like to do this maybe adding ...

These are the progression photos of  painting I made. My plan was to make multiple paintings experimenting with different materials, such as sewing into the canvas. I wanted to use both the sink as well as the bars however, due to the time restrain of the project I chose to focus on other ideas that I felt more joy to do, and I also felt would make a better final outcome. If I have some time spare at the end I would like to do some more experiments with paintings and layers. After speaking to Julian on what I been working on and plans I have, he suggested using the sink to display these paintings. I like the idea however I felt like these paintings are too small to display on the sink, I would like to design some new paintings, maybe focus on just the vegetables (as I like how my composition was getting when I started sketching for the page of vegetables - was meant to be scanned and used for other idea but never finished it). I feel like making something A4 or bigger will look bet...

These are some photos of the making process of the sink - I did not end up finishing this as I decided it would be better to work with the real sink. My plan was to make the shape of the box and have the back open, I was going to make a wall look like the wall the sink is against and put the carboard sink against it, this was so it would be easier to work on the inside of the box. My plan was to do a small experiment using fabric as water as well as the plush and painted vegetables, I thought that working on a smaller scale would make it so I can do more experiments quicker and then could make a larger version with the real sink after. However, this never got finish and I never make any of the small vegetable samples. This is something I wish I still did.

These are some small studies I done of vegetables, using a mix of different colours and materials. I did not do as many as them as I hoped to have done and some of them are not finish. This was from focusing on other work more as well as not doing as much work as I normally do. If I have some spare time, I want to work on these more and do some more of them.

Professional talks - Blast Theroy (missing photos)

Nick Tandavanitj - Blast Theory  Their website Today we had a talk on the performance group, Blast Theory, given by one of their founders, Nick Tandavanitj. They made interactive art, being formed in 1991, they often explore social and pollical questions, using unsettling and unusual experiences to create new views and to open up to the idea of change. They have created a mix of things, from games, apps, films, performances and insulations, and also uses pop culture and new tech within their work.  I enjoyed this talk, it was inresting to heard about these performances and to be aware of more art that is happening that i was not aware of. While i found it to be intresting, it is not the type of work i am intrested in my self. In this talk, Nick spoke about a hand full of the work they have done, These being, 'Kidnap', 'Can you see me now?', 'A machine to see with, 'My one demand' and 'Spit spreads death'. 'Kidnap' - 1998 - livestreamed 'f...

Extension on this project Due to many people requesting it, we have all been given an extension on this project until New Year/February, we will still have other projects while we still work on this. With this extension i would like to explore more of the ideas i had, such as looking such as combining plants and prison bars, as well as experimenting with textured illustrations and patterns. My plan is to carry on with the sink idea until the 21st (the original deadline) and a bit longer as i wish, and then start to explore the other ideas i have. I think i would be more interested in making a textured image, looing at patterns and different materials as well as sewing into the photos/illustrations. This extension is now until the 5th of December 2024, but i will stick with my plan of exploring more ideas.

meanings behind different vegetables (tomatoes, carrot and potatoes focus for now) - from different online sources Tomatoes - Peaked.com  (notes = photo) Carrots - SprititualInsider.com (notes = photo) potatoes - SpiritualMeaningAcademy.com  (note = photo - non tattooing notes) SpiritualMeaningAcademy - the rest of information (tattooing meaning) came from. While looking on the SMA website, I saw that they meant more specific meanings such as dreams, dead and bible. They had the tattooing means of these vegetables on the website and i chose to focus on those meanings over the other ones as they related to the starting point of tattooing as well as the bamboo being still being related to tattooing. I find that this will have a better link to what i am creating and the journey i gone on, compare to any old meaning would. Tomatoes - Love for  health, vitality and nurturing traits  Carrots - (some notes = photo) Grounding oneself amidst turbulent times Potatoes - R...

Focus on sink idea  I want to focus on my sink idea as we have around 2 weeks until hand in. My plan is too make 3D veggies - felt/fabric and paper/paintings - that I will put in a sink. I plant to use fabric to show water and cover the sink in paper that will have bamboo painted on it. After speaking with Julian on this, he recommended projecting images onto the sink, so i would also like to explore this a little before committing to the paper. I wan this to be playful/silly looking, i want it to be something that is fun to look at and not trying to go for super realism. I think it will be interesting to use a mix of plush and paper food, adding different textures and colours into my work. I would like to use found materials around the studio as well as things I already own, i wish to spend as little as i can on the project (only buying things if i cant find, such as specific colours of felt i don't owe and cant find). This is both due to not wanting to spend a lot, as well as bei...

Some ideas after talk with Julian (week starting 11/11/2024) These are the sketches of some ideas I have and want to explore, expanding on my previous ideas of laying and twisting an abandoned place/prison into something with life and somewhere someone lives/has made into a home. These are some small studies of a tomato plant, too have a better understanding on how they grow around bars. Next time I do some work with this plant around bars, I'm going to do it in a similar way i did the first time but focus more on making colours a bit more detailed. I find the one where i wasn't bothered if it is growing fully realistic to have look nicer and look more uniform then when trying to make it more accurate. I then started to look at using bamboo to replace the bars, this was inspired by seeing trees lined up like bars. However, I didn't want to use something so detailed like trees and wanted to try and link it to my starting point of the symbolism behind tattoos, spe...

Talk with Julian - After 2 week break Today I had another talk with Julian, this time on my new ideas I had over the 2 week break. In this talk he spoke about insulations, filming/photographing myself and making of things. This was a useful talk and helped me have more ideas on how i can develop my work.  While showing some of the photos i been looking at, he recommended going to the Gallery of Justice to take some photos there and maybe talking to someone on being able to get in for free - as i am there for more then a visit (he also said that it is okay to use someone else photos in my work). Julian also said about finding our who their curator is and contacting them on doing a small insulation there, this would be a fun thing to do but due to the time we have I don't think i will move forward with this idea. (edit 14/11/2004 - I think i will see more on exploring this idea, seeing if they have a sink in a cell that i could do an insulation in - moving an existing piece int...

2ish weeks of work (edit - work i did between the talk with my partner and a talk with Julian) These are the sketches I have done over the past two weeks (not a lot due to personal reasons and having other things i needed to focus on). During this time I i started to look at some photos for inspiration/to use in my work as well as some ideas on what to do with them. These are some sketches/photos of an abandoned prison found in the middle of a field, outside of Barton, Arkansas. These photos was taken from Flickers by the photographer phiZzL3. My goal was to look at how prisons look and find a way to add my twist to them. I chose to work on top of these photos (tracing paper/other transparent paper on top of them) too add the life images. I could work on top of the existing photos or work on top of my own paintings/illustrations of these photos or my own photos. This is some small experiments i did, working on top of tracing paper that is...
