Reserach

I want to look at some artists who works with simple shapes, lose paintings and suggestive. This is both as looking where my own works fall in the art world as well as expanding my view, as I wish to have a more lose approach to one of my planned pieces (stop motion of bamboo growing through paintings)

Gabriele Maurus - Paintings of Food

(all photo are from https://www.saatchiart.com)

It looks like all of these works have used watercolor in some way, some being more focused on that and some using it to add colour. These pieces remind me of how I create my own paintings. I mostly work with watercolor with some sketchy lines (mostly in pen which I add after the paint layer, sometimes a pencil sketch beforehand). I like to use the properties of watercolor to blend the colours together and let it fall in its own way, sometimes I will be more detailed with my brushstrokes when the paint is more dry but I mostly add more detail work with a different median such as pen,

'Four Green Beans Drawing'
The bold black lines around the beans, along with the shadows not blending into the white makes it look more complete.  The use of the paint in the shadows as well as the line work not being perfectly straight,  gives it a soft look. However, this piece is more bold then her other work. I feel like this one looks more uniformed than some of her other works, such as 'Fruit and Vegetable Drawing'

'Fruit and Vegetable Drawing'
I like her use of pattern, especially on the potato and how she added lines to her potato with pencil together with the use of colour. I feel like this adds a cool visual interest to the work rather than if she was to just paint it like a potato. This also adds individuality to her work. This work seems more like a sketch/lose study of the study matter, that still creates an interesting finished piece.

'Pear Beauties Painting'
The use of the properties of watercolor to paint these, allowing the paint to move in its own way without having full control. This gives the subject matter more life/movement. This work also looks like a completed piece, however it is a lot more soft and natural looking then her 'Four Green Beans Drawing'.
