Quentin Blake March 2024 Blake is a children book illustrator who has done for for Roald Dahl books. I chose to look at his work, as he has illustrated for many popular books and has a style that people notice/remember. His work has inspired me the most in the couple of books i looked at, i like the simple look his work have, it having a more rushed look like line work, but still looking like a finished image. I enjoy the playfulness of his illustrations. It seems like he does not illustrate for these books to make a 'high quality' illustration as a pieces of 'art' more as something to support the story and for kids (and adults) to enjoy, as an image.

Stories (my retelling)

Draft 1 The Selfish Giant Retold by Carolann Parr Inspired by Nick Ellsworth Originally by Oscar Wilde In a land far, far away there lived a gentle Rock Giant {name}, this giant lived down in the middle of{forest name} forest, far away from his previous home within the {mountain name} mountain, to build himself a lovely home with a large, beautiful garden, away from all of the other not so gentle Rock Giants. {Name} was very proud of his new home and all the lovely things he places within the gardens, he finally had a place he was proud to call his own and he would do anything to keep it safe. His favorite part of his new home is when spring time would come to visit, the flowers would bloom in all of their bright colours, the fruit would grow from the trees and bushes and most importantly, the Sporelings from Mush Village would come up to play. They would arrive just as the sun began to rise, laugh and played until night sky fell upon the forests. "Good Night Mr. Giant" the s...

Stories

I have chosen to write the story on my own, still being inspired by the one by Ellsworth and reading through it to help with my story line flow The Selfish Giant Originally retold by Nick Ellsworth Edited by Carolann Parr Once upon a time there was a gentle giant who traveled down to the middle of Moss Hill Forest, from his old home up in the mountains tops, to built himself a castle with a large, beautiful garden. The giant was very proud of his new garden and all the lovely things he placed within. He especially liked when springtime came, when all the new pretty flowers came out, the shrubs blossomed and a warm breeze blew through the branches in his many trees, softly rattling the leaves. On lovely spring days such as this, the giant liked nothing better to do than to open his window and hear the sound of the local children playing in his garden. They came as the sun began to rise early in the morning, played there all day long until the night sky fell upon the forest. "See yo...

Kitsch March 2024 I wanted to look into what kitsch is, to have a better understanding on ways some art pieces can be presided and incase my work is to accidently become it. Jeff Koons 'i used it to remove judgment and to remove the type of hierarchy that exists. I don't like to use the word 'kitsch' because kitsch is automatically making a judgement about something. I always saw 'banality as a little freer than that.' Koon talks about not liking the word kitsch, due to the more negative connotations and judgmental view on things being kitsch. This being seen as someone people of 'lower' class collects, due to lack of experience around things of 'more value'. He explores the idea of what has value, taking something that is kitsch and enlarging it. His work is often a way to talk against kitsch, it having kitsch look however not being kitsch within itself due to the meaning behind his work. Kitsch things are often cheaply made objects with the pu...

Final Project proposal/initial development March 2024 For my final project i would like to illustrate fairytales/folklore in a whimsical, natural style.  I plan to look into different stories, firstly looking into ones form my childhood and maybe moving onto world stories.  I would like to look at a way to show these stories with ceramic or another strong material.  I want to do this as i enjoy the work i did for the collections project, what was based on the idea on the importance and permeance of words that i shown by engraving the words onto ceramic slabs.  My idea is suggest someone had spent time to add them to ceramic (a replacement to stone) and chose it over paper as it will live for longer, suggesting the idea that the story holds importance.  i would like to experiment with doing small sculpture scenes as well as printing onto clay, especially for the written stuff as it will take to much time to hand carve/stamp the full story. I was also inspir...

Stamps and Product Photography 11th March 2024 Today I printed 'FTGP' onto some of my handmade paper using some letter stamps and black ink. After I did this, I did a little bit of photo photography with the paper and some nature elements. This was the first time I done this, my first couple looked a bit odd and more armature than i wanted it too however after speaking with a classmate i started to put my extra elements closer to the paper and do a bit of layering that I find a lot better then the first couple of photos I done.

Ceramic postcards 11th March 2024 Today I went down to ceramic to get my letters from last week as well as do some ceramic postcards. The letters from last week came out successfully minus a little bit of warming. I chose to not glaze these as I didn't want them to have a glossy look to them and I liked how they look with just a bisk fire, not glazing them does mean that they are not as strong as they could be, what I find okay for experiments and inspired me to use ceramic more for my next project due the importance it suggest as well as how it can easily be broken suggesting how easy it is for words/stories to change.
