Final Project proposal/initial development
March 2024
For my final project i would like to illustrate fairytales/folklore in a whimsical, natural style. I plan to look into different stories, firstly looking into ones form my childhood and maybe moving onto world stories. I would like to look at a way to show these stories with ceramic or another strong material. I want to do this as i enjoy the work i did for the collections project, what was based on the idea on the importance and permeance of words that i shown by engraving the words onto ceramic slabs. My idea is suggest someone had spent time to add them to ceramic (a replacement to stone) and chose it over paper as it will live for longer, suggesting the idea that the story holds importance. i would like to experiment with doing small sculpture scenes as well as printing onto clay, especially for the written stuff as it will take to much time to hand carve/stamp the full story.
I was also inspired by the book 'the secret garden' and think it will be an interesting route to go down if i do not find much enjoyment or inspiration from fairytales/folklore. I like the idea of looking at ways other artists have shown escapism or created a space in which someone can experience it. I also think it would be interesting to look at the negative effects escapism can have on someone's mental health, such as mandative daydreaming.
Escapism will more likely
Starting point for this proposal
My starting point of inspiration for this proposal was the tracing landscape project, I was inspired by my feedback i was given on my small emulsion prints, being told that they look like they are from another world. I liked idea of looking into this more, changing our current world so that it has another world feeling or creating a fully new world. I could do this from looking made up worlds from games and stories as well as, creating smaller worlds or change our current world such as scale, colour or adding thing that are not usually there.
After this, i started to want to make something more magical and fairy like, such as making mushroom ceramic houses and peg doll people, taking inspiration from kids toys. I like the idea of taking things i have always enjoyed such has natural things have a more human elements, and houses made of mushrooms, trees and others. I liked this idea but found that i didn't have much of a purpose for doing it other than liking it and maybe linking it to childhood memories, this is where i was inspired to look into fairytales and the importance of stories.
