FMP Project Proposal

For my FMP I want to explore different elements of the natural world, having a focus on plants/mushrooms but am open to expanding into other elements such as landscapes and animals/bugs/insects. I want to work with illustrations, painting and maybe prints, using a mixture of materials to add layers and texture to 'flat' work. I would like to make a long term collection, making art throughout this whole project that can go towards the final one, this can be one large one or many mini ones that become one (e.g. spending a week working on mini collection, such as focus on folklore and the next week being herbalism)

In terms of my concept for this, there is mutiple ways i can go down, but i want them all to have some magical/fantasy twist to it, being by the way they are created. One way I can explore this is looking at the world in a fully make believe way, like we are looking at the world through a lens, or creating new plants. Another is just exploring the natural world in 'groups', being from endanger to plants to herbalism. These ideas can blend together in different ways, i want to spend the first couple of week exploring different ideas and doing a lot of research for all the ideas. Along with the flat work, I would also like to make some books to go along side them.

Some ways i would like to add more visual interest to my work/making it more magical/fantasy looking is by the way i layer materials. I would like to add layers of extra colour, in small amounts, such as if the flower is pink i can add some hints of blue into the petals. I also want to explore adding texture and details, this can be from lines/dots that i add within, adding patterns or sewing/beading into the work. Along with adding elements to the plants it self i would also link to explore different backgrounds, such as block colours or text.

While working on this i want to spend more time looking at how i can display these or ways i can make them 'bigger' - more ambitious with it. I'm currently unsure on the exact route i want to go down with this but i would like to look at how nature base museums display their specimens, such as Wollaton Hall.

The first couple of weeks - 
I want to work from both photos and life, using my own photos as well as photos that i have found online and i would like to do some sketches from life, being as buying flowers/mushrooms to draw, going to parks or going to Wollaton Hall. I want to do as many experiments as i can, exploring different routes as well as starting research for each one (e.g. folklore, native, herbalism ...), these mostly being lists of plants and very basic research - mostly from books i already owe. Along with this, i want to spend more time looking at different artists and doing more of that research to expand my ideas and have a better understanding on what's going on and where my work land, this will also be useful in helping me come up with ideas/work out how to show them. 
During the first 2 weeks of the FMP, i will be working on a Zine for the Bonington, this links with my FMP as I will be looking at folklore of different plants, focused on food we can each such as garlic and apples. This is something i can use for an experiments for my FMP as it is a route i can go down, and i can also expand on it for my FMP if i want to.

Putting up show day 1 3rd June 2024 Today was my first official day of putting up the show, I wanted to focus on cleaning out my area, adding the mesh and fabric to the frame and putting the frame up. What I was able to complete  I realise that I put the mesh on the wrong way, but j was able to fix the issue buy flipping the frame before I put tje fabric on. My original plan of having the hook things for the books will not work, due the the fabric being in the way. I chose to do tie fabric tight and didn't realise that I wouldn't be able to put the wire between the fabric and the frame. I plan to put the hook things on the under part of the frame or on the inside edge I don't like the sag that is happening to the mesh, I plan to sew it to the fabric once the beads have been hung, so that it will have a more clean and finish look to it Before I headed home, I did some lose draping of the fabric so that I have a bett...

Brocken books When demolding some of the books the corners broke off, due to not much sticking to plaster I chose to use plaster to stick it together. I did have some issues with it sticking, so I scopped it onto the book and plan to sand it down Sanding - doesn't work well and takes alot of time to get a little amount done Speak with James - next time soak the peices before adding plaster as it would mean it can't soak up the water from the new plaster, making it easier to stick Sanding - due to the books being fully dry he recommended that I soak the books and then scrape the the book smooth Soaking and Sanding - I am able to use the spoon to get under the second layer of plaster and remove it without the corner falling off again

 Project proposal  My plan for this project, is to explore a made-up counterculture around the idea of taking back control/identity from those who are in authority. This counterculture can be seen in both a negative and positive late, as the people reclaiming their power have been labelled as criminals. On one hand, this could be viewed as in a negative way as the people/criminals deserve the punishment they received, making it seen as unjustified for them to take back their freedom. But it can also be seen as everyday people reclaiming what was unjustly taken from them—those who were wrongfully accused, committed crimes out of necessity to survive, or became victims of their circumstances, not intending harm or feeling remorse for what they did, or simply making a mistake. I will be taking inspiration from Japanese criminal tattoos from the Edo period, which were used to mark someone as a criminal.
