Studio Practice - Summative Evaluation

Summative Evaluation

For my final outcome (to be displayed in the VR headset) I wanted to work with pattens with hidden meanings as well as working in a group/community. I feel like this has been achieved it but not fully in the way I wanted it to. I created a patten inspired by lace, hidden meaning and natural elements that can be found withing Nottingham Castle's paintings. Along side this I planned some community based work to do with this, the first section not going to plan - of adding colour to the fabric - but the second going to plan. This second group sewing was the main one i planned for the VR headset, for this one I wanted to do a comparison from the old lace making to now day, as our studio is in a lace studio. I found that this ended up having more comparisons that i was planning, all in a good way. I notice that why it is a physical comparison of what the room was once and what is it is now, it also shows emotional differences. I see this from how this was an enjoyable experiences for the people taking part, them having a break from their own work to do something relaxing together, talking and catching up to each other. However, this was not necessary the case with the lace makers, as this was their job, that worked many hours with little money and didn't much have a choice for this. It shows how something that was quite hard to work it, has changed into something more positive. For the majority of thus project i didn't really have a goal in mind, other then wanting to work with pattern and the natural world. I found it quite difficult to know what i wanted to do with the pattern i was making, this changed after I had a convostations with Julian about my work, where he gave me suggestions on what to do and i chose to make it community base as most of the designs i was making symbolizes love. I did not have a lot of time to developed this, having about two weeks to do something before the internal deadline. If i was to have more time, i would have liked to make more deigns and maybe make it more personal - giving people the chance to add colour to either the fabric piece or a paper version, and also letting them write on the back of it (e.g. wishing protection to someone, a note for someone they love....). I did not want to explore this at the time as i felt i did not have the time needed to fully developed it. Other then this the bigger 'issue' i had with this is not being able to fully plan it so that people are able to join, and also as i was so focus on other elements i didn't think about the small details such as asking my classmates to remove their lanyards for the photos.

Despite this, as this is an open project that we are working towards and external deadline (not picked yet), so i have the ability to work a little bit more on this project before it is shown in the castle. I don't want to work with the photos of fabric pieces any more, but i do want to make paper base 'activities' for the castle, this can be a coloring page (that i can photograph and make a digital patch work) as well as an activities to allow people to look for each elements in the castle, such as the long gallery.
