Studio Practice

My plan of mutiple days of people spending a little bit of time adding colour the fabric did not work as everyone was too busy (I expected this to be how it went, but did think would be able to get a couple of photos of this) - this is part of the reason why i chosen to leave it how is, i rather leave blank for now until can plan something bigger - maybe could make it bigger and invite people to join me in adding colour at the castle (edit, I am leaning towards just the paper version and think want to leave the fabric how is)

On the Monday, while waiting for people to join, Julian recommended that i did photos of myself sewing into the fabric. I did this and i like the outcome, i think these work better as a small stop motion then as stills. This inspired me to do a similar thing when i take the photos in Liz's room, where i want to do a mix of stills and stop motions.

Group sewing -
Myself and 3 of my classmates/friends did this together, i like this more then if it was to be a big group. Cause i didn't know how many people could be joining, i didn't fully plan on where in the room the photos would be taken, i planned that if it was a smaller group i would do the photos in one of the book corner and if a bigger group i would do it in the middle of the room, where there is tables. I ended up doing it in one of the book corners, the one where i could see the windows in some of the photos - i chose this one as the windows design was chosen to make the most out of the light and save money on candles while it was a lace loft.
I did a collection of still photos and photos to be turned into a mini stop motions. I did all of these on my camera but did a couple on my phone for documentation.

After photos we carried on sewing during Liz's lesson , during this i also worked on one, so that all of the good prints would be used and sewn together, i also worked on putting the panels people have made together to start making the full thing. This did not get finish, due to time, but i do not mind it as i can still display them in their unfinished state. I started to do my sewing differently then other peoples - as i found the original way to be more difficult especially if i was to handsewn all the panels together - the way i chose to sew hidden the thread, this was not intentional but i do like the contrast between the different types of sewing. I like that i can see the thread that other people have done, and know what i did and what other people did - along with being able to see who did what part based on the way it was sew. This gives more of a community look to me, then something that needs to be perfect all around, it is perfect in its own way, having memories sewn with each stitch.
Looking at all photos, the whole thing works as a mini stop motion. Reminds me of flipping though CTV cameras and some looks like the photo is taken with the intent of them not knowing it happening. It reminds me of a small group of people doing something in secret. I would like to do a small stop motion of all the photos and call it 'the secret sewing society'.

Displaying the work and some of the paper ones

These are the colour of thread i chose for the piece.
I chose to let people mix their own paint colours, keeping within the colour scheme i chose, this is cause it would be too expensive for me to buy tubes of paint for them all/for the bulk of them. I did buy paint for 3 of the colours that i think would be the most difficult to mix.

This is the area i set up for people to sew in, i set up camera for one/two people to sew together on the sofa but planned to move the camera so people can sit on the floor is more people joined.

This is where the sewing was done, and a small test photo of a way I can get the sewing and the windows in the same photo.

These are some example photos of people sewing, done on my phone. One thing i forgot to ask them do was to remove their lanyards, I feel like the photos would look better without them but i still like how the final photos came out.

The piece i worked on during Liz's lesson.
