21/1/25 - Making the slabs + experiments
Today I went down to the ceramic studio to start making some slabs. It tock a couple of tries before i got the right thinness for the clay, the tech also recommended using some cutters (like cookie cutter) to make it easier to make many shapes. I found this helpful however i also found the square one hard to use (edit later - I did get a 3rd shapes to try out but didn't end up going back down to use it). I tried doing a small experiment with using lace (like my lace sample idea) however they no longer had their box of lace and i didn't have any on me, i tried with the lace they did have but it was too fine and didn't show up well on the clay. I did a couple experiments of patterns into the clay, however i did not have a plan when starting this and only ended up doing a couple (only keeping one) before giving up and planning to make designs for the rest. With the ones i did do, i experimented with both hand engraving into the clay as well as some patterned stamps i found.

23/1/25 - Free hand carvings
On the following Thursday I did 4 freehand engravings inspired by some of the pattern designs i did the day before. I did this as i was worried on the clay getting too dry to use if i wanted until Monday. I like how these came out, i enjoy the wonky hand made look they have. Despite how much i like these and enjoyed making them, i don't really know what to do with them now or how to expand on the idea.

30/1/25 - Collecting + small talk on stamping
Today I collected my sample ceramic tiles, I have not yet chosen how I want them to be glaze so i plan to take them up to the studio and brainstorm/think about how i want to do it. Currently i think have little sections of colours might be a good way to go (edit later - I haven't glazed them and not sure if I will in own time, I am still leaning towards small sections of colours using an under glaze but don't know what colours i want to use or if i want it glossy). After collecting the tiles I had a small talk with James on how I can make some stamps for the tiles. He recommended giving Don some Lino and laser cutting the design into it, i did not want to do this, but he also said I can carve into clay and use plaster for the stamp. These do not have to be that deep as i though they did (edit later - moved on from this but want to keep it in mind for the future)

Examples of some underglaze on two types of clay.

The stamps that i used to cut out the shapes.

Sorting out the thickness of the slabs, the first one was too thick and the second worked. plus a comparison of both sizes together.

The failed attempt of pressing lace into clay - didn't fire this one cause didn't work at all.

These are the stamps i found in the ceramic studio as well as two tests. I finished the one with the cherry, using the stamps i found, but i didn't get the strawberry one fired as i didn't like it at all.

Two work in process photos of the free hand engravings I did on Thursday, these photos show the guide lines i did as well as how i was creating my holes.

These are the photos of the 4 test tiles i made, before they got fired.
